Some people may have heard of ozone its used in many areas of daily life for removing odor, sterilizing water and air in homes and public buildings like hospitals.
What some folks may not know is its also top notch at killing molds viruses and other unseen nasties roaming through the air 24/7
Ozone is a gas created by electricity and air its the smell people associate with thunder storms that crisp almost acidic smell in the air immediately preceding a thunder storm. Humans have devised ways of making it at will by either electricity with plates or glass tubed wrapped with electrified metal mesh or by using UV tubed like in water treatment.
If you have a water sterilizer in your home that makes your water warm or hot even on the cold setting when you first turn on the tap you probably have a UV water sterilization system the heat is generated by the UV tube.
Ozone is safe for people to be around at low levels but higher concentrations will cause irritation of the eyes and mucus membranes higher levels can damage your lungs, so its important that you do not subject yourself to high concentrations of ozone.
People use ozone to remove smoke smell in homes from smoking or even house fires, in cars to remove tobacco smoke smell, to clean the air in hospitals, in the days before carbon filters to remove the smell associated with indoor gardens.
But that’s not all it can do for instance if you have a space that’s plagued with mold especially tight spaces like crawl spaces, bathrooms, attics, etc Ozone can be a god send with a cavoite that you are not in the space or near where it may seep out just to be safe, as I said its not fatal usually but better safe than sorry.
You would need to place the ozone generator in the space and then run it until it builds up to the point where it seeps into every nook and cranny of the space being treated the time required depends on the size and how sealed the space is a bathroom for instance will take a few hours an attic much longer.
In the picture above are two blocks of cheese both were covered in blue and green mold this photograph was taken part way through the treatment you can see most of the mold spores have been neutralized and only a small amount of mold can still be seen.
For this demonstration I sealed the cheese and ozone generator into a large margarine container to simulate a small room. The effects would be the same to mold in a given area to the mold in that space. This was about a 3 to 5 minute dose at high concentration. Meaning I turned the ozone on then once it achieved a high concentration I started timing, like preheating an oven.
After the cheese sat in the sealed container for about 15 minutes this is how it looked when I opened the lid. As you can see the mold has all been obliterated and only the white area remains which can be cut off if you’re actually using this method to treat cheese, but in a room you should not need too as the mold has been nullified the spores are dead and can no longer reproduce.
After this treatment you would need to exhaust the room with an open window, or fan etc. the gas is not dangerous for you if you vent it out before reoccupying the room but you need to be the judge if its irritating you then get out and give it more time to degas.
this will fix the mold spores in a room at the time of treatment but it will not stop future infestations for that you need to fix the underlying issue and once that’s done the mold cannot take over again molds require a couple key things Cold and damp so fixing air flow stop the moisture and if possible warm it up.
Ozone generators are available in many different configurations and styles from light in room air purifiers to big commercial modules the one pictured above is a 120v dual plate and very effective at a really reasonable price online eBay out of china etc. you can also get them in 220v and even 12vdc for cars trucks, campers and RV’s
