Rent in trail British Columbia

Recently I have seen Prime minister Trudeau in the news again proudly rolling out his ideas to buy back guns from Canadians now my views on guns aside I think this is a really bad idea.

I understand the argument that guns need to come out of the hands of unstable folks bent on harming others and if that’s what my fellow countrymen think best fine its a democracy you cannot win them all
but, I can think of at least 1000 ideas that Id prioritize over buying guns from people and some directly or indirectly lead to more people dying than our deadliest mass shooting at any point in time.

Rent prices are out of control in most places in Canada and its getting pretty bad when you cannot find a place in a rural area with no industry and a Walmart that does not even have a legitimate grocery section.
its out of hand when your rural rents prices are more than that of Toronto or Vancouver when that happens it behooves our politicians to address that issue and make it a priority, it may not get you the same media attention but its the right thing to do its the Canadian thing to do.

Id like to know how the politicians expect Canadians including low income, working poor, those on assistance, single parents, seniors and yes even the disabled (including vets) to afford a place to live when everything in $1200 plus. Before utilities which goes up every year it seems before medications before internet (which is almost an essential service) and before even food.

The Rental assistance programs don’t begin to cover it and they leave out so many people who need it most many disabled those on income assistance and seniors are excluded for varies reasons which I’m sure seem great on paper but in reality it just is not enough.

If your a single parent on a multiple persistent barrier program or income assistance you are ineligible despite not having an increase for the shelter portions of decades so many single parents I know receive $325 a month for housing at best $500 ultimately it does not matter because I deify anyone to find housing anywhere in BC where you can find a home for that much. In fact most could not afford a house if they paid every dime of their total monthly income forwards rent and skipped luxuries like food.

homelessness comes with many faces

You have people starving and homeless and instead of working on helping that issue our leaders buy guns so they can destroy them and because 1 guy committed a truly atrocious act brutally ending the life of over a dozen people its horrific yes but so is putting money towards the buy back while fellow countrymen have no place to call home .

All of this have been multiplied by the effects of the pandemic where again the Canadian government threw money at the suffering Canadians and it was appreciated the irony is that people are now experiencing what others have been suffering or years and no one did thing one to help them and cannot even correlate the two similarities. The stress and soul crushing situation is transitory and brief but while when the pandemic ends only one group goes back to a better life.

The politicians are so focused on achieving a goal that will put them down in history as the guys who got the guns but have lost sight of the bigger picture. Yes you might stop mass shootings maybe and Canadians are well aware people who want to kill will do it box cutters, knives, delivery vans, poison they are creative and driven yes you might slow gun violence but you WILL be symbolically putting a gun to the head of millions and pulling he trigger causing poor schooling, starvation, exposure, drug addictions etc. to the people who cannot afford to rent a place to live.

In truth politicians are so far disconnected from the society they are charged with protecting and working for they cannot understand.

politicians do not understand

There are a few who have made an effort most notably in BC a politician who vowed to live a month on the income paid to those on social assistance. He made a very big show of the attempt except that after a week the story was scrubbed and nothing more was ever said about it
The politician Id wager discovered its impossible to do especially without help from the wider community and few politicians have the necessary connections to allow couch surfing and other such necessities required to live on that income.

And that was well WELL before the spike in rent prices.

This needs to be made a priority its been ignored too long landlords have lost all sense of morality and you can easily see houses that were known low income rentals go from $500 a month to $1600 over night and without so much as a coat of paint or even a deep clean they can rent a slum for $1600 a month because people have only one choice pay it or live on the street, Others rent $2000 a week Air BnB and vacation rentals still more rent a single bedroom for $1000 a month plus utilities turning the house they rent into a huge cash cow. The greed has been allowed to run rapid and its not getting better.

Low cost government housing is barely an option as the wait lists and stipulations involved to get a place is vast and soul sucking.

rent not guns

Im sure reading every day multiple ads for housing you cannot even come close to affording has led to people taking drugs or ending their lives because of how pointless it is and how little you can do to better your situation.

Its soul shattering and the other day I was talking to a single father whos 15 year old son is looking for a job in order to help pay rent enabling his family to get out of a less than ideal shared housing situation, at 15 you should not be worrying about pitching in for rent so you can have friends over or have more than a small bedroom to call home

I do not have answers but I have suffered the effects and felt the pain involved of knowing there’s no where you can go to get one of the most basic human needs probably the single biggest need past food water and air, and the only one that has such ineffective social help for.

You can be poor and find the necessities like food and water but not housing and people don’t care until it affects them, they pass those people it may even register they might even toss some change their ay then off into their homes and its forgotten about can hats the regular folks the politicians barely even come into contact with it so its not even a topic of conversation. how can it be when you go from our big house to work and back in nice neighborhoods.
