In my experience cloning is something that most people have trouble with. often having very poor success rates is anything lives at all. Because of this there are entire sub markets in the horticulture industry that sell all manner of gizmos, thing-a-mabobs, and whoza-whats-its that claim to make it easy and effective.
You do not require any of that crap, yes some are fancy and are worth having not for the success it may give you but just because its cool to have in your toolbox. The truth is anyone can achieve 100% success with nothing more than water, stimroot #2 and something to put the clone in soil, jiffy puck, coco-coir, lecca, hydrocorn, etc. No fancy machines, no fancy rooting gel and so on. again all those things are to impress you, your plant could care less and in all honestly most people fail with cloning because they try too many products and like a helicopter mother they smother the clone in too much attention.
Im going to show you a stupidly simple hack to make cloning 100% effective with nothing more than Stimroot-#2 and a plastics pop bottle….. You are simply making a micro climate where you control the environment, cuttings have no other means to sustain themselves other than through their leaves. they maintain themselves while producing roots through their leaves. Cuttings stand a much greater chance of survival in a humid environment. Cuttings as I said draw in moisture through the leaves BUT they also loose moisture through the same leaves, this is why cuttings with fewer leaves stand a better chance of survival than ones with big or a lot of leaves. You have to find the sweet spot.
Using pop bottles like this gives you greater control over each batch, and if for some reason one gets contaminated pests or virus you have a better chance of the other micro climates being ok, the “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” philosophy.
Pro-Tip: Take your cuttings as normal and once all set up in the containers put them in a warm DARK place for a day or two, you just hacked them off their main body they are going to be stressed out the dark helps them recover a bit before jamming them under bright light. people assume that light is required asap but from my experience the dark ensures greater success than bright light straight away.
This post assumes that you already have a basic understanding of cloning such as when and where to take your cutting what basic implements you will require and the equipment required like lighting etc.
I am posting this from the point of view living in B.C. Canada where 4 legally obtained plants are legal to cultivate. So this method is effective and fits those needs, I am not suggesting that anyone break any laws of course and this may be impractical for anyone attempting more plants that will be up to you to decide and if your not breaking any laws.
This method also pairs very nicely with my multi strain grafted mother plant. If you have not checked it out please give it a look. To summarize you graft new strains onto a mother plant being careful to follow the laws laid out in your area and to label clearly each new section so later on you know what strain is what. You will probably have to do one strain at a time and with only two plants at first if you are in BC etc so you do not break the 4 plant maximum law
Start your mother then once its going well and has several vertical nodes start a second different strain once its big enough graft it onto the first plant henceforth known as the “mother” once it takes and is actively growing you can flower the donor strain then pop another seed from another strain legally purchased and repeat the procedure eventually you can stop and as long as you only flower 3 plants at a time and house the mother in another space you are rocking at any time you can clone a strain you like and do not have to purchase new seeds time and again.
Get yourself a plastic bottle the size or quantity will depend on how many clones you want to make for instance if its one clone a basic 710 ml soda pop bottle will do fine 2-3 you will need a 1 liter bottle, more than that you will just use more pop bottles or a 2 liter even a plastic milk jug (though not my choice its opaque and could block light)
Get the bottle you desire remove the label and then carefully cut along the line on the bottom of the bottle where the thin side wall meets the beefier bottom portion usually an inch or two up from the bottom of the bottle.
Cut all the way around slowly and try to keep it straight. separate the two
You have the choice of drilling a hole in the cap of the bottle or just leave it as is the hole allows air to move in and out but you can do the same thing opening the cap once or twice a day for a few minutes.
Take your clones as you normally would remove from the plant place in a cup of water to stop potential air bubbles becoming an issue. The water also helps the next step remove the clone from the water dip the node into the Stimroot powder give the stem a light flick making sure any excess IBA rooting powder falls off and then place into the medium you wish to use.
Im going to show jiffy pucks and all my estimates on how many you can fit are based upon their measurements.
Place your new clones into the bottom end of the pop bottle and then carefully put the top half into the bottom cup watch the leaves so as not to pinch them or trap them between the walls
Once its attached put it off somewhere not overly bright for a day let them hang out and rest then take and out in a warm place top of the fridge on your gaming console, on your cable box etc (seriously all work great)
once a day you can open the bottle via the lid allow the air to exchange even spray down from above a little super thrive and water or any b vitamin stress reliever your good without it but it makes you feel proactive
You can move them after a couple days to another warm space with light something like a t5 or other non powerful light source and in about 5 days roots will be poking out the side o the jiffy puck. Presto your done and it cost a dollar or two works every time and is easy as hell.
Using a bottle is not only effective its reusing something you already have kicking around and it costs you nothing, this works so well because it holds in the moisture and creates its own little micro climate where the plant can breathe and eat through its leaves it requires almost no effort on your part once you put the two together reducing any errors or helicopter gardening. You can see through the side walls and will know right away when roots begin to show.
Do this as Ive laid out and you will have 100% success with almost anything you decide to clone and it works exceptionally well for some very popular crops.
leave a comment let me know how it works for you.
